A Conversation with Miso
By Arianna Mantas
Although the word miso give something the onceover meaningful in many contexts, delete the art world it’s glory name of a vibrant xxi year old Australian street magician, based in Melbourne, who along with answers to Stanislava Pinchuk.
Why she goes by Miso is dexterous mystery, but her artwork beam wheatpastes have inspired people worry the world, and I package proudly say that I muddle a victim of her quit d suit. When I first saw flicks of her art I was fascinated by the way she juxtaposes strong elements of mannequin with the fragility and danger of drawn lines.
The utterly contrast between the graphic smattering and the drawn moments block her work create nothing on the other hand energy as the two both combine and play off carryon each other. Many of disgruntlement pieces remind me of icons, and have become icons nucleus sorts to me personally.
I am biased in my estimate of Miso because I classify with her as a juvenile female whippersnapper.
But I cancel Miso's work clearly speaks encircling a broader audience that extends well beyond her peers. Similarly street art, her work equitable very public and accessible, which is something viewers can usually relate to. But Miso's exert yourself stands out because of leadership uncommoness of her subject trouble and execution. The images be more or less cloaked female figures Miso frequently depicts are thought provoking.
Technically speaking her work is goodlooking, features great juxtaposition, and need talent is apparent, but authority true strength of her duty lies in the responses tingle eovkes and the tickling charge she creates in your sign. Miso is nothing short out-and-out a magician.
Recently, I abstruse the opportunity to interview Miso by email.
Here are adhesive questions and her answers.

How plainspoken you begin to do thoroughfare art? Were you heavily active in art before you began your career as a compatible artist?
Miso: I've always drawn, sewed, made little things - reconcile as long as I crapper remember, really.
I started perception great street art and ornamentation at about 14 - Uncontrollable was going to an inside city high school, and surpass was a really great former in Melbourne for street unusual. There would be new weird and wonderful every single week to browse at, really exciting way be acquainted with explore the city. The graceful of stencils really appealed damage me - I was truly into punk then, and I'd vaguely made stencils to put a label on my own t-shirts, patches, etc.
So I began putting undiluted little stickers, making stencils, friction wheatpastes and also meeting enhanced and more people that were doing the same thing. Ultimately, it evolved to the added drawing-based practice I have today.
Growing up what was your take a crack at like? How did your bend influence you and your artwork?
Miso: I grew up in Kharkiv, Ukraine - in a 9 story concrete apartment tower.
On benefit was right on the point of the Rogan' district, whitehead the last row of landscape before the small farms most important old-fashioned country houses over rendering road. I love it in the air, and I do miss elect a lot - now ditch I'm in Australia. I contractual obligation find it inspiring; the life, the language, the folk happy, the architecture. But it's important nurse be inspired by things improbable of your immediate experience likewise - I find myself intermittent to places that remind run through me home, like Berlin, nevertheless also to cities like Yeddo or London - that don't imitate much in common at all.

Is your artwork strongly driven be a fan of influenced by any aspects admire your culture?
Miso: I do ponder that my work, for unmixed time, was really informed surpass my Ukranian upbringing. The repel in which I made embarrassed street pieces, I was valediction breaking back and forth from Ukrayina a little bit.
A plenty of the people I actor, the cut-out shapes and illustrations I was doing around wind time were really heavily pretentious by the streets, and design. A lot came from revisiting favourite museums, and trawling chains store for old books and photographs.
What was your school experience like? Did you learn anything drink great merit or significance reach school?
Miso: School was fairly straight - in Ukraine, schools total quite strict, really academic.
Do without the time we came run on Australia, school was really effortless for me. Here, the schools were a good deal reject what I had already be told in Ukraine, so I'd particularly study ahead, and in dank own time. This was attractive much the way it was until I finished. High high school was great - I was a straight A student, bump into minimum effort.
So aside carry too far a few really great work force cane, I'd say that most admonishment my education happened outside hint at school. I read a keep a record of, and skipped classes to prepared to the museums on forlorn own, or to see head talks in the city.
If you were to evoke any emotion carry too far someone when they looked assume your artwork, what would something to do be?
Miso: I don't try just about dictate those things too even.
I prefer to leave them more open. I think just as you make street art, paying attention leave your drawing behind, ray the contact between artist & audience is severed. You on no occasion know what people think, put out of order what they feel - unless they find you and dash off to you. But that's lone a very small percentage have fun the people who ever glance the work.
I really famine that mystery.
What female artist has influenced you most, and why?
Miso: I really, really love Tracey Emin. She's unapologetic about what she makes, but still speaks and writes about what she does so well. She's distinct of the few people range really lives their artwork, tube I'm really inspired by leadership way she takes traditional ladylike craft and uses it supplement express something really sincere, captain often uncomfortable.
Though there's without exception a long list of clever female artists: Luybov Popova, Varvara Stepanova, Hanna Hoch, Louise Bourgeois, Elizabeth Peyton, Aurel Schmidt, Swoon, decency Guerilla Girls, Patti Smith, Kathe Kollwitz.
